Sri Lanka is preparing for the official debut of Elon Musk’s satellite internet service, Starlink. According to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRCSL), a pilot program involving 12 users is now underway, with commercial availability expected shortly after a one-week trial.
Key Details:
• 112 Starlink kits have been imported
• Monthly fee: Rs. 15,000
• Hardware cost: Rs. 118,000
• Unlimited satellite internet via low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites
• Launch monitored by TRCSL & Ministry of Defence
Starlink received approval in August 2024, following telecom law changes to allow satellite-based internet. However, national security concerns were raised by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, citing lack of local data access.
Starlink, run by SpaceX, aims to connect rural and remote areas across Sri Lanka. The service is already live in nearly 100 countries.
